Traffic accidents in Indonesia have become one of the main issues in transportation management. The high number of accidents in 2024 reached 152,000 incidents, with 27,000 fatalities, predominantly among the productive age group. The trend of accidents has increased by 30% from 2019 to 2024. The consequences of these accidents result in costs, including the loss of productivity, which can lead to an increase in poverty levels. In response to this, efforts to improve safety can be made through the installation of road equipment, traffic signs, and markings. The installation of these road facilities should be accompanied by driver awareness, so that the efforts can be effective and result in a reduction in the number of accidents. This research is a preliminary study to analyze the implementation of self-explaining roads in relation to traffic accident costs. The study identifies the high number of accidents that can be reduced through the implementation of self-explaining road design. The initial data shows the relevance of this concept to safety, and the research can be continued to the next stage of analysis in accordance with the MOSI criteria.
